Smithsburg is a charming agricultural community in Washington County, Maryland. Established in 1813 by Christopher “Stuffle” Smith and incorporated in 1846, much of the community development occurred during the nineteenth century. During the Civil War, the Smithsburg is a historical gem, in that it remains much as it did during the turn of the twentieth century. Encompassing 1.06 square miles between the Chesapeake Bay watershed and the Appalachian Mountains, this town of nearly 3,000 residents enjoys a moderate climate.
Although a small agricultural community, amenities can be found within a short ten mile drive in most directions. Smithsburg’s closest sizeable neighbor is Hagerstown connected by MD-64. Proximity to both I-70 and I-81 makes travel convenient. One of the biggest draws to living along the Appalachian Trail, if not the biggest is accessibility to several incredible state and national parks. Outdoor enthusiasts will flip over the boundless recreational activities at their fingertips.
Single family homes in Smithsburg are reasonably priced. Homebuyers will find a mixture of older and newer builds, all modestly styled and keeping true to the down to earth community they stand in. Most properties include ample yards and garages. The town is served by Smithsburg Elementary, Middle and High Schools, as well as Smithsburg Police Department and Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Department.
