Sharpsburg Homes for Sale
The historic town of Sharpsburg, Maryland was first settled in the mid 1700s by English and German colonists. Founded in 1763 by Joseph Chapline, the town was named after Chapline’s dear friend, Governor Horatio Sharpe. Little did they know that one hundred years later, Sharpsburg would be a pivotal site during the American Civil War. It is was here that the bloodiest battle of the war was fought, the Battle of Antietam. Today, the town looks much like it did in the eighteenth century. Although it has modernized, it has done so in a way to preserve the historical integrity of the site.
With little more than seven hundred citizens sharing 0.23 square miles, Sharpsburg is predominantly residential. There are however a handful of local small businesses, including shops, eateries, taverns, inns and salons. Hagerstown is a mere thirteen miles north and boasts a number of restaurants, retailers and other amenities. Sharpsburg is conveniently located close to Interstates 70 and 81. The town is bordered on the northeast by Antietam National Battlefield historic site and Sharpsburg Park is located the southeast. Three miles due south is the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Park, which includes a trail of 184.5 miles alongside the canal from Washington D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland.
Homebuyers will find a range of options in Sharpsburg. Most properties are inexpensive to moderately priced and are smaller 2-3 bedroom houses. Larger residences of 4-7 bedrooms tend to be newer builds (within the last 20 years) or mature homes, including pre Civil War constructions. The community of Sharpsburg has held true to its heritage and continues to be the charming, picturesque rural town that it was two hundred years ago.
